Maurice Garcia-Sciveres is a senior staff scientist in the Physics Division and has worked at Berkeley Lab since 1994, as a postdoc for the CDF experiment.
Maurice has a rich history of developing and advocating for interdisciplinary instrumentation, including serving on the DPF Coordinating Panel for Advanced Detectors from 2013-2022, leading the LBL Physics Division Detector R&D program from 2011-2021, holding the position of deputy director of the UC Berkeley Experimental Particle Physics center since 2015, and many other things besides.
Physics Division
Richie Bonventre is a staff scientist in the Physics Division studying lepton flavor physics. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania for his work on SNO+. His research spans both low background and high intensity experiments, with a focus on readout electronics and firmware. He currently works on the straw tracker for the Mu2e experiment at Fermilab and readout electronics for the EOS experiment at UC Berkeley, and is also a member of the Particle Data Group.
Molecular Biophysics & Integrated Bioimaging Division
Jan Kern is a senior scientist in the Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division. He is a physical chemist by training and is combining crystallography and spectroscopy to better understand reaction mechanisms in metalloenzymes and photosynthetic systems. Jan is especially interested in understanding the initial atomic response to light driven charge separation in proteins and is working to establish novel methods to utilize femtosecond X-ray pulses from free electron X-ray laser sources for studies of these systems. He is an active user at the ALS as well as the SSRL and LCLS user facilities in Stanford.
Physics Division
Peter Sorensen designs, builds and characterizes novel instrumentation for beyond the standard model particle detection, with a particular emphasis on meV to keV scale signals from neutral particles. He is currently serving as the Group Leader for Detector R&D in the Physics Division at LBL.
Molecular Biophysics & Integrated Bioimaging Division
Junze Zhou is a nanophononics researcher specializing in scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). During his postdoctoral research at Berkeley Lab, he collaborated with imaging and nanofabrication facilities to develop advanced near-field probes for nanoimaging low-dimensional materials, focusing on exciton-plasmon interactions at the nanoscale. Currently, Zhou is exploring applications of his expertise in bioimaging by extending the working wavelength into the mid-IR range.
Biological Systems and Engineering Division
Jamie Inman is a Biologist Research Scientist in the Biological Systems and Engineering Division. She is a developmental and cancer biologist and her research interests include biological responses to environmental and radiological insults. She studies mixed radiological exposures, ultra high dose radiotherapy and the impact of thirdhand tobacco and cannabis smoke exposure. She is an active user and/or collaborator at the ALS, Molecular Foundry, BELLA center and the 88” cyclotron.
Nuclear Science
Division
Joanna Szornel is a researcher specializing in radiation detection instrumentation for nuclear physics experiments and applications. She serves as the Area lead for germanium fabrication in the Semiconductor Detector Lab for Berkeley Lab. Her expertise spans multiple aspects of detector systems, including detector fabrication, readout electronics development, and signal processing. She holds a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from UC Berkeley.
Engineering
Division
Giorgio Vallone received his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, with a thesis focused on Structural Health Monitoring of Helicopters. After graduation he joined CERN where he started working on superconducting magnets for particle accelerators. He is currently a research scientist at LBNL, and he keeps contributing to the world of superconducting magnets, and to the development and construction of particle detectors.
