Dr Marcus Noack (Berkeley Lab), April 2026
The Center for Advanced Mathematics for Energy Research Applications (CAMERA) is a cross-disciplinary initiative at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory that develops and delivers new mathematical foundations, algorithms, and software to accelerate scientific discovery at experimental facilities.
Gaussian processes (GPs) are a foundational machine learning method that unifies probabilistic function approximation, uncertainty quantification, and decision-theoretic optimization. This talk presents recent advances in scalable, domain-aware GP methodologies designed for modern applications in physics, biology, materials science, and chemistry.
I will highlight their role in self-driving laboratories and autonomous experimentation, where GP models serve as surrogate predictors and adaptive decision engines in closed-loop exploration and optimization. These developments position Gaussian processes as key enablers of AI-driven discovery—combining statistical rigor, data efficiency, and principled uncertainty estimates to accelerate experimentation and scientific insight.
