Dr Morphy Dumlao (Berkeley Lab), May 2026
Single‑particle mass spectrometry (SPMS) enables particle‑resolved analysis of chemically complex aerosols through controlled laser–particle interactions and well‑defined ionisation processes. We report a field‑deployable SPMS platform employing a dual‑ionisation strategy, combining gas‑pulse aerosolisation and high‑flow aerodynamic particle concentration with resonant laser ionisation tuned to aromatic electronic transitions, complemented by non‑resonant ionisation for broader particle characterisation. This architecture enables near‑real‑time, per‑particle mass analysis while maintaining molecular selectivity across heterogeneous aerosols.
As a demonstration, the system detects trace illicit drug residues, including cocaine, ketamine, MDMA, and benzylone, on surfaces and in aerosols during live inspection scenarios with no observed false positives. Beyond interdiction, the platform provides early indication of aerosolised chemical presence, supporting informed operational decision‑making and improved occupational safety during inspection activities.
